The crisis facing California sea lions

State officials have declared an “unusual mortality event” for California sea lions, after an unusually high number of pups barely clinging to life have recently washed ashore.

For a sense of the sheer number of pups who have reportedly been found washed up:

In Los Angeles County, nearly 400 pups have been stranded since the beginning of the year. Last year, 36 were reported during that stretch.

As of March 24, officials said, 214 sea lions were reported stranded in San Diego County, 189 in Orange County, 108 in Santa Barbara County and 42 in Ventura County.

and thus, next morning as if a script had been written about my rant, a Big Earthquake (7.6 Richter) puts us again in the front pages of the international press.

we’re fine here in San José, we’re far from the epicentre yet, news reports of the area surrounding it are bad, a few victims have been identified but it’s soon to know…

and I have yet to get scared or get that funny feeling in my gut or get that scary dizziness you get with post traumatic stress disorder… and I have had my share of bad stories regarding earthquakes since I was 12.

and yes this is also a True Story and yesterday’s post was my final complaint about our lack of newsworthy things for the world to know

  if ever this country is mentioned in the news is either because of three reasons: 

Bad news

1- people miss pronounce puerto rico 

2- a natural disaster occurs

 3- a criminal gets caught hiding 

Show business news:

A celebrity decides to spend a few days in the “middle of nowhere”

Goofy animal news section 

-a giant bug manages to get past all security and trade laws and regulations and gets a free ride to the UK inside a shipment of bananas where is found alive, attracting the interest of the press and then becoming a sort of celebrity with school children that flood the natural history museum that becomes its new home where a contest is held in order to have the children name their new favourite arthropod from the tropical rain forest

- a local dude has a giant pet alligator  befriends the crocodile hunter and is the subject of several documentaries made by Australian, British, German and US television, including one filmed with special 3D filming technology made by South African filmmakers, if not more that I’m not aware of.

here’s my favourite, although I kinda like the bug story:

-two local small time crooks decide to go in the cattle stealing business, so they decide to steal a cow from a milking farm not very far from San José, so they go and steal it, and then, while trying to get away with the cow, they figure that the fastest way to transport a full grown milking cow is to find automotive transportation for it, of -course, these *geniuses* deserve a nobel in mathematics… -

 what happens next is beyond ridiculous:  

given that the two bandits probably are not that experienced in the cattle stealing business, or whatever, and after all it’s two guys making a gettaway with a stolen cow, and given that they need to get away and get away fast, the best thing they come up with as they’re running away is they decide, they need ANY automotive transport, they decided to go with whatever and they end up:  

1- stopping a passing cab,  

2- making the cab driver hostage (accidentally, according to the cab driver himself) 

3- forcing the cow, to ride in the back seat of the cab

 -a cow??? in the back of a cab??? how in world???, is it a mini cow?, you may ask: well, no it wouldn’t be news if it was a mini cow, it was, a full grown cow stuffed in the back of a cab and how in the world could this have happened? well, it’s a mystery, science is still trying to solve

 as the idiots are trying to escape forcing the cab driver to driver faster than the legal speed limit, transit police is eventually involved and the requisite cab chase follows, only this time at some point the crooks have had enough of it and decide to ask the driver to stop and run away leaving the cab, the cab driver and the cow and the mess behind…

   So then, the crooks escape and are never caught, the cops arrive, the cab driver gets arrested, the cow is found, the press is called, pictures and video are taken and the rest is history…

 but there’s more to this story of course:

 because it takes the police hours to manage to have the cow released from the cab, as you know, the owner’s manual does not indicate a proper way to do this, the cab driver then makes more local headlines a few days later as he claims that he was not involved in the plan to steal the cow, and he was wrongfully accused of theft, but he also claims he was the biggest loser because, during the little trip and with the stress of coming out of the car: the cow left a huge mess inside the cab and no one was being made responsible of this but mostly, because while being in a detention cell at the police station, other people in detention kept making fun of him…

-imagine the trauma-

once released, the cow then was returned to its rightful owners at the farm and they renamed her “milagro” which means miracle in spanish, for what reason exactly? It’s still unclear, and now it has become famous, a song was written about the incident -apparently- and a few years later it also gives birth to some other cows, life in the farm was good …

two years ago “a cow with a taxi” is a conceptual art piece that was part of the local Cow Parade, but this time, the cow contains a taxi.

And now last friday, Milagro the cow, dies and it’s news again, sad news

 why exactly? It’s not very clear that we’ll ever make it again to the “good” or goofy news headlines, since the bug has taken permanent residence in the UK and now speaks with an accent and the giant pet alligator also passed away last year…

True story #2: Breaking up with friends on FB and the nature of Haters

My dearest Tumblr audience… greetings, I have had two very rough weeks, in fact it’s been a rough few months, so sometimes personal and family matters have the power to completely worn you out, work can be even worse sometimes, and when everything comes together at the same time things manage to become even bigger in scale.

Last week one of my closest friends, who happens to be a huge Game of Thrones fan happily announced that he had “chopped off about 200 “contacts” in his FB friends list” it kind of sounded hilarious because he used a reference to that show, and then another close friend commented that since we were reading that we had been spared for the time being… fun thing how we can change our minds up regarding how we feel about some people in our lives.

After much thought, recently I decided to do something that could have been unrecognizable of me even a few weeks ago: I decided it was time to break up with a friend, or someone who had been really close for a while, and who had the privilege to be called my friend but for several reasons, as for the details, this story is kind of really long, but it can be resumed by saying that this person abused that relationship many times in the past for small little, forgivable things, but most recently it happened with a clear intention on their part to fulfill their career and personal goals, and the tension it created, reached to the point where it was enough for a decision to be taken.

And as with any break up this has become a strange time for me, it makes me feel a little bit guilty even, and I suspect the reason for this break up being so hard on my part, is that this friendly relationship had become somewhat a problematic issue for me, personally and at work, because up to this point and as a personal rule: I had decided to try and get along with people who were friendly with me and whom I am or want to be friendly with, those who can we be friendly with (this is were the word frenger becomes incredibly useful) and with my best friends, those who I love to bits -my real soulmates- if you will, whom I would never imagine having any excuse to break up with.

But frankly sometimes, and much more lately, there had been bigger issues going on and sometimes you grow impatient with some people for a number of different reasons or let’s be honest, some people can develop the ability to ruin friendships and thus it is about time to make a clean cut, “chop off” as my friend called it, I will describe it by it’s right name: “it’s not you it’s me, you jerk!”.

This break up has been made worst because of online relationships communications, namely Facebook. We all remember the “break up” scene from the Social Network, it was hilarious in that context, and so familiar, we had all been there, seen that ourselves or someone close to us suddenly changed a romantic status and there it was public for all the world (and mostly your close contacts) to see, in fact, it is when yourself or your friends announce a romantic break up, it’s normal or even expected, because society has a way to program our social expectations to a point in which if we start a relationship of romantic nature, it could end up with a break up, but how do you break up with friends? is that even acceptable?, and mostly in the Facebook era: I found a simple guilt free solution in Facebook itself: You add them to a new feature called the “Restricted” group and also an old feature the “Chat Options” were you select those who can contact you in their live chat or not.

Thus, in appearance, friendships remain, but this is not as rude as “Ufriending” someone: how complicated things have become through the years: I remember when Netiquette almost only included rules for the use of Capitals as to not appear to be yelling online!, yet, with this feature what you choose to share as public is limited, because despite it all, I do not wish to become this person’s enemy or be the cause of the “mighty rage” of being “Unfriended”, but there have to be middle stages which should help once relationships get complicated, like it is in real life: I try to avoid the places they’re going to be and try to avoid their physical presence, if they want to get in touch with me there are SMS and maybe cellphone calls, those which I chose to take, technology can make us be closer today but only as much as we wish to be.

But this is not the first person who joined the Restricted bunch, that’s also the new place where you’ll find the flirty jerk, whose story I told in my last post, and also in this list are a couple of people from my family who joined Facebook not long ago but whose sole presence in this network has caused me to use more privacy filters than with anyone else: there are things that I wish to share that I don’t want my family to know about, but surprisingly, I have found myself applying more filters to my family members than to most of my friends, filters that block their ability to know who is in my contacts list, because, after the horrendous break up of a cousin and one of my best friends, years ago, I learned a lesson and learned to become a believer in the separation of friends and family just as I believe in the strict separation of Church and State. The silly thing is: no this is not about embarrassing pictures or silly youtube videos or bad jokes or stupid posts people tag you in, but mostly about and please get ready for this: it is about political and religious views and following closely: music and films.

I have grown to hate Facebook because of how divisive these issues are. These issues can be divisive in real life, but they become out of hand online, if you might, another place to find how these turn people into idiots are Comments in Youtube, it doesn’t matter what it is: music by a great Danish or Australian band, a fantastic Mashup made by a kid genius from France, people getting ready for the Carnival in Rio, Pictures of cute hedgehogs with anime music in the back, a guy scuba diving in the Maldives, the latest rant about the new hip Fluorescent colours by an offended teen fashionista, or Make-up Artists putting on tips to do great smokey eye, you name it: online networks become a horrible mirror of how bad people get while arguing and how stupid arguing is. And lets be honest the word “Hater” has been wrongfully attributed to Hipsters, whom I have absolutely no problem with, the thing if we pay attention we will find Haters are all around us, there are no middle stages about being opinionated about issues, either you hate or you don’t. But I have had it with it, I am so careful with what I post on Facebook because: I am afraid of haters, and trust me I have couple hipster friends or maybe I might be a little hipster myself, and like that matters, those who have treated me worst are those who have nothing to do with being hipsters.

And don’t get me started with Twitter… but since only the people who follow me are people I trust (ok, 99% ) and it’s not so widespread and I mostly use it to follow people I care about like musicians, designers and some pretty cool people some who are my friends, from work or school and some whom I have met online, it’s ok but the 140 characters get to my nerves sometimes.

This leads me to Tumblr, my one true place to find solace online, a place where I can be myself and also share stuff I don’t want others to hate me about, or have issues with my friends or family, that’s why I hardly ever use tags, so what if my audiences are restricted to the few people who have managed to become my followers, their decision to follow me is theirs and so far it’s where I have felt the best sharing my feelings my “status” and such things…

I met this guy through friends in Facebook, he’s involved in filmmaking too…

Last week after he complains about why people rather go to a local music fest than say, read the news and be aware about issues going on in this country, I sort of make clear, that not only I attended this music fest (best one ever!!!!, seriously huge names in music are rarely playing around this part of the world, you just have to go see them whenever they come around) and also I read the news, stand the content of it without making my liver hurt, and also am aware of what’s going on in the world, as most of my friends who attended said music fest with me or without me are, well most of them of course, some people are just lost cases anyway.

While checking my Facebook last night, a chat window opens, and turns out is this filmmaking dude, who first tells me I come across as “difficult”, later tries to make conversation mostly concerning the colour of my eyes, which is brown and is probably something he can guess from my profile picture and the times he’s seen me in filmmaking events, later tells me he thinks I’m really intelligent, and this is where this becomes hilarious…

The “intelligent” conversation turns into some sort of personal disclaimer for him: He tells me the girl he’s been dating told him that “despite the good sex, she knows she can’t be with him for long because she can’t stand to be with someone who knows more about the world than she does, so their days are numbered”.

Notice how he mentions “good sex” in a conversation that is supposed to be about brains, notice how also he mentions “a girl he’s dating” but how their lack of intellectual connection means their relationship is not going to last…

He then, asks me if I know about this and of course I know about this: sadly for a girl a little bit more interest in reading and studying decrease the chances of being successful at dating, it’s kind of the story of my life I tell him.

I try to take the conversation back to brains, anyway:

I say something I believe is true, at least for me: 99.99% of the time brains just scares people right away, the 0.01% get scared later on, sometimes with pretty bad break ups.

the guy then tells me he’s going to listen to this jazz band tonight in this place downtown, then I say I am not a big jazz fan (you’re kidding me right????) as I roll my eyes, I tell him I listen to indie rock and electronic music and stuff like that…

This time the guy answers by giving me his cellphone number… I try to find an alibi, I turn to the rebroadcast of Saturday at Coachella on Youtube and show him the link instead, Wild Beasts are playing what I believe is a pretty good set.

I then excuse myself to sleep, which is not true, but I realized that I have to go and tell him that I believe I will be really busy tonight and may not be able to go see a jazz band (even if I had the day off I wouldn’t go anyway) and since I have his cellphone I can call him anyway.

then it was like Ciao Bye!!! and Facebook off.
